Can You Use CPAP Without Water?

CPAP machines are important devices that help patients with breathing difficulties maintain normal breathing. Whether it is necessary to add water when using it needs to be discussed in detail.

For some CPAP machines, it is not necessary to add water. CPAP machines usually process air through filters and humidifiers to provide appropriate humidity and pure air.

Some CPAP machines are equipped with a humidifier with a humidification function, especially when used in a dry environment. A humidifier can help increase the humidity in the air and reduce the dryness and discomfort of the respiratory tract. However, not all CPAP machines require a humidifier; it depends on the user’s specific situation.

If you are using a machine equipped with a humidifier function, you need to set up and operate the humidifier correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions before using it. Humidifiers usually need to be filled with the right amount of water, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid too much or too little water, which could damage the device or affect its performance.

In some cases, the CPAP machine can be used temporarily without water. For example, when the patient is in good physical condition and has no obvious dry cough or breathing difficulties, it can be used without water for a short time.

However, it should be noted that the use time in this case should be controlled within a short time, and the machine should be cleaned in time before and after use to ensure its hygiene and safety.

Is It Necessary To Add Water To CPAP?

The answer depends on the functional design of the CPAP machine and the user’s comfort level, which is completely different for different types of CPAP machines.

  1. Basic CPAP machine: No water is needed, this type of device only provides air pressure support.
  2. CPAP machine with humidifier: water is optional. The humidifier is used to relieve dryness discomfort, but it can still be used normally after it is turned off.

According to a study by the American Journal of Respiratory Care (2018), about 67% of home non-invasive ventilator users choose to turn off the humidification function, especially in humid areas. The water temperature of the humidifier must be strictly controlled at 30-37°C (FDA guidelines), otherwise bacteria may grow.

Whether to add water to the CPAP machine has no effect on the effect of use, it only affects our comfort. Some people are naturally less sensitive to dryness, and they don’t feel dryness when using the machine without adding water, so it makes no difference to these people whether to add water to the machine. There are also some people who must add water to the machine, and the humidity of the humidifier must be adjusted very high. These people are very sensitive to dryness. So, in fact, it still depends on your own situation to decide whether to add water or not.

Patients with lung diseases should add water when using CPAP. If the patient has lung disease, it is best to add water when using CPAP, because the air inhaled after adding water has humidity, which can dilute the sputum in the lungs and respiratory tract.

Although it is feasible to use the CPAP machine without adding water, it is recommended to add water when conditions permit. For COPD patients, using a humidifier with water can moisten the airway, increase the expectoration effect, and prevent dry mouth; for snoring patients, it can buffer the impact of airflow on the oral and nasal mucosa and increase comfort.

When A Humidifier Is Not Necessary?

There are two types of CPAP humidifiers: detachable and non-detachable. Both types can be used without adding water. For those CPAP machines with detachable humidifiers, the tubing can be directly connected to the main unit, omitting the humidifier. This design is suitable for short-term business trips or travel because it saves space. Some CPAP machines have a humidifier integrated with the main unit and can be used even without adding water.

  • Never had dry mouth while using CPAP.
  • The humidifier is always full in the morning, and I never have dry mouth.
  • The environment is humid with high humidity.
  • Travel frequently and can’t carry a distilled water or a humidifier with you.

Steps To Not Add Water To CPAP Machine

1. Disconnect the humidifier module

Simply remove the water tank from the device (some models require pressing the release button). For example, the design of the ResMed AirMini allows the water tank to be completely removed to reduce weight.

2. Turn off the humidification function

Select “Humidity Off” or “Waterless Mode” in the machine settings. For example, for ResMed AirSense 11: Go to “Clinical Menu” → Humidity Level → adjust to 0.

3. Using Alternative Accessories

Install a dedicated “waterless tube” (such as the HybridTube series) to reduce condensation.Replace the standard mask with an anti-drying style (such as the Fisher & Paykel Evora Full).

Note:
– Some models (such as 3B Medical Luna G3) must keep the water tank empty before turning on. In this case, you can add only 5ml of distilled water to avoid the alarm.
– Long-term non-addition of water may cause nasopharyngeal dryness. It is recommended to use saline spray (no more than 3 times a day to avoid mucosal irritation).

When A Humidifier Is Necessary?

Although getting rid of the humidifier will make things easier, not using a humidifier or adding water is not suitable for everyone. For those who need to use a humidifier, the consequences of a lack of moisture are more serious. If you use a CPAP without a humidifier at night, you are likely to suffer from dryness or irritation of the respiratory tract, nosebleeds, and even affect the treatment effect.

  • You frequently wake up with a dry mouth.
  • You take medications that cause dry mouth.
  • You live in a dry area.
  • You are over 60 years old.
  • Your CPAP often uses up a lot of water in the reservoir during the night.

Benefits Of Using CPAP Without A Humidifier

Reduce the risk of machine failure: When using a humidifier, if you use tap water, the metal ions in the water will produce scale under the vibration of the humidifier. These scales will drift into the air with the water vapor, potentially causing damage to the CPAP filter membrane and leading to machine failure. Therefore, not using a humidifier can avoid these potential problems.

Easy to carry: A CPAP machine without a humidifier will save a lot of space. If you need to travel frequently, this will save your luggage capacity. You can also try a travel CPAP machine.

Reduce the possibility of stains and infection: The water tank of the humidifier is the most likely place for CPAP to get dirty. A moist and warm environment is a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. If the humidifier is not cleaned regularly, it may cause an infection due to bacteria.

CPAP Water Addition FAQ

Is it correct to add water to the CPAP machine humidifier above the maximum water level?

Some users worry that the water in the humidifier will dry up, so they add more water than the maximum water level. However, adding too much water can easily cause water to enter the host, and even in the case of large-flow air discharge, the liquid may boil and splash into the pipe or mask, causing the user to choke. In addition, if the humidifier tank is filled too full and exceeds the maximum water level, water droplets may enter the pipe, making the device unusable.

Therefore, when adding water to the humidifier, you should strictly follow the requirements, and the amount of water added must not exceed the maximum water level. At the same time, you should also avoid adding too little water. It is generally recommended to add 30% to 50% of the maximum water level to ensure one day’s usage. This can not only ensure the normal operation of the equipment, but also prevent safety hazards caused by too much or too little water.

What should I do if my humidifier runs out of water during the night?

If the humidifier runs out of water at night, it will operate normally and safely without water, but it will not provide the humidification function.

Do you need a humidifier when traveling?

Some people will disassemble the humidifier and wear the CPAP machine when traveling (most CPAP machines with humidifiers are disassembled), leaving the humidifier at home to save space.

In fact, if the air around you is humid enough without a humidifier, you can use the CPAP machine comfortably even without a humidifier.

If you feel the air is really dry, it is recommended that you wear a humidifier when traveling. Or you can buy a portable CPAP machine. Generally, portable CPAP machines are very small and have a waterless humidification function, which can make you much more convenient.
