Things to note before cleaning CPAP equipment:

It is recommended to use neutral soap and water or distilled vinegar solution for basic disinfection. It is strictly forbidden to use cleaning methods that may damage the equipment, including

  • Strongly corrosive cleaning agents such as bleach
  • Ordinary water with mineral impurities (prone to residual scale)
  • Putting the main unit or accessories in a dishwasher, washing machine or dryer without the manufacturer’s permission.
  • Diluted vinegar on reusable filters
  • Disposable filters made of thin paper material must not be washed in water to avoid affecting the filtration efficiency due to material degradation.
  • Be sure to strictly follow the safety operating specifications of the equipment manual during cleaning.

How often should a CPAP machine be cleaned?

The cleaning frequency of CPAP equipment needs to be determined according to the specific model and manufacturer’s guidelines. Generally, parts that are in direct contact with the mouth and nose (such as masks and air tubings) need to be cleaned immediately after use, while other accessories (such as humidifier tub and filters) can be maintained on a weekly or monthly basis. Please be sure to turn off the power and disconnect the device before operation to avoid damage caused by water ingress. Different brands have different designs, so it is recommended to follow the official instructions in the manual for cleaning strictly.

How to clean CPAP surface

It is usually recommended to clean the surface and the panel thoroughly regularly. This includes using a soft cloth or sponge with an appropriate amount of neutral detergent to gently wipe the surface of the housing and panel to remove dirt and dust. At the same time, care should be taken to avoid using corrosive or irritating chemicals to avoid damaging the material and performance of the CPAP machine.

Secondly, during the cleaning process, a certain operating sequence and skills should be followed.

  1. Start from the top and gradually wipe down along the edge of the surface and panel to ensure that every corner and gap is fully cleaned.
  2. Also pay attention to keeping your hands clean to avoid secondary contamination.
  3. After cleaning, fully disinfect the CPAP machine. This can be achieved by using ultraviolet disinfection lamps or disinfectants such as 75% alcohol.

During the disinfection process, a disinfectant that is compatible with the material of the CPAP machine should be selected. Generally, 75% ethanol or quaternary ammonium salt disinfectants are more suitable choices. If the panel is contaminated with blood or body fluids, choose a suitable disinfectant for treatment.

When cleaning the CPAP machine, be careful to ensure that no liquid enters the machine. During the cleaning process, the housing, buttons, power cord, and high-pressure gas supply pipeline should be properly handled.

How to clean CPAP humidifier

Daily cleaning

When cleaning the CPAP machine humidifier, the following safety procedures should be followed as much as possible:

  1. Turn off the power supply of the machine and unplug it
  2. Separate the humidifier components and empty the remaining liquid
  3. Use disposable sterile wipes to thoroughly clean the inner wall and interface
  4. After completion, place it in a ventilated and cool place to dry naturally, avoiding direct sunlight that may cause plastic aging or component deformation.

During daily maintenance, ensure that the humidifier barrel is always clean and transparent. If scale deposits or material discoloration are found, they must be handled immediately to maintain equipment performance and reduce the risk of bacterial growth.

Weekly cleaning

  1. Soaking and disinfection: Use neutral detergent (diluted at 1:10) or white vinegar solution (vinegar-water ratio is 1:9) to prepare cleaning solution every week, and immerse the humidifier barrel completely in room temperature liquid for 30 minutes to soften scale and sterilize.
  2. Deep rinsing: After soaking, rinse the inner wall of the barrel repeatedly with running warm water at least 3 times to ensure that there is no detergent or vinegar residue to avoid chemical volatilization affecting respiratory health.
  3. Scientific drying: Place the cleaned humidifier barrel upside down on the surface of a clean absorbent towel, and place it in a cool and ventilated place to dry naturally. Direct sunlight or high-temperature baking is strictly prohibited to prevent plastic deformation or aging of the sealing ring.
Clean CPAP Humidifier Tub Weekly

Every day, you need to pour purified water, mineral water or boiled water (choose one) into the humidifier within the MIN-MAX reasonable range. For example, if you use the CPAP machine at night, you can pour purified water before going to bed and pour it out the next morning. The main function of the humidifier is to humidify the gas entering the pipeline to prevent the gas from being too dry, thereby avoiding dry mouth and discomfort for CPAP users. Using a humidifier can significantly improve the comfort of wearing a CPAP machine, and regular water changes can help maintain the purity of the water in the humidifier, ensuring that the air we breathe is cleaner and healthier.

How to clean CPAP mask

The mask is in direct contact with the human face every day. As the mask is worn for a longer time and is not cleaned frequently enough, dirt and bacteria will gradually accumulate, threatening the respiratory health of the mask user. Therefore, regular cleaning of the mask not only helps to improve the comfort of wearing, but also effectively prevents bacterial growth. In addition, the life of the CPAP mask is usually maintained at about 6 months to 1 year. If the mask is damaged, deformed, leaking or difficult to clean, it should be considered for replacement immediately.

Clean CPAP Mask Cushions

Cleaning steps:

  1. Completely separate the mask cushions, mask headgear, nose pillows, and hose.
  2. Soak the mask cushions and nose pillows in a neutral detergent solution for about 15 minutes.
  3. Gently scrub the dirt on the accessories. Use a soft brush to scrub the small areas, and then rinse with running water.
  4. Soak and disinfect with diluted disinfectant. After rinsing, let it dry and continue to use it.
  5. The mask headgear is made of fabric and needs to be cleaned separately. Be careful to scrub gently to avoid pulling hard to cause deformation.
  6. Carefully check each component and rinse thoroughly with clean water to ensure that there is no foam residue.
  7. Do not wring the mask headgear hard. After gently absorbing excess water with a dry towel, place it with other components in a place without direct sunlight to dry naturally.

Other precautions:

  1. After daily or each use, please wipe the mask gently with a damp soft towel to remove any grease or tiny dust that may be attached. If you use skin care products, please use facial tissue or oil-absorbing paper to remove excess facial oil.
  2. Avoid using overheated water when washing, and only wash by hand. Do not use a dishwasher or washing machine.
  3. Do not use solutions containing ingredients such as vinegar, bleach, alcohol, fragrances, moisturizers, antibacterial agents or sesame oils to clean the mask and pipeline to avoid damaging the product and shortening its service life.
  4. After washing, please dry in a cool and ventilated place, avoid direct sunlight, exposure or high-temperature drying, and avoid contact with sharp objects to avoid scratches.
  5. In addition to regular cleaning and maintenance, you should also pay attention to avoid mixing the mask with wool and cotton products to prevent the Velcro from sticking to the wool fibers and affecting the bonding effect of the headband.
  6. Regular replacement of the mask is an important measure to ensure the normal operation of the ventilator. It is generally recommended to replace the mask every 6 months, but if any cracks, breaks or tears are found in the mask components, they should be replaced immediately to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the device.

How to clean CPAP filter cotton

The filter is located at the air inlet of the ventilator. Its core function is to intercept dust and prevent it from entering the airway. This function is crucial because it is the first barrier to protect respiratory health, just like the nasal hair in our nasal cavity. Regular replacement of the filter is essential to ensure that the user of the ventilator is away from respiratory problems such as coughing, asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

Replace the filter once a month! Regularly remove the filter and flick the dust off, and clean the groove where the filter is stored to maintain its optimal performance.

Replace CPAP supplies

CPAP supplies need to be replaced on a planned basis based on regular cleaning, and it is recommended that the replacement guidelines provided by the manufacturer be followed strictly. Normally, supplies such as nasal pillows, mask cushions, and disposable filters that are in direct contact with the face should be updated every two weeks, and other accessories such as hose, humidifier tub, etc. can be replaced on a monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual basis based on actual wear and tear; if parts are found to be worn, aged, or significantly discolored prematurely, they must be replaced immediately to ensure safe use. Although the CPAP host itself has a long service life, it is still necessary to pay attention to official equipment recall notices to avoid health threats due to potential failures.
