STOP-Bang Questionnaire

Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea (OSAHS) is a common sleep disorder leading to apnea or hypoventilation. This will seriously affect our daily lives.

STOP-BANG is a simple screening tool frequently used by doctors in clinical practice. It can quickly help adults assess their risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and is quite effective at screening for OSA.

The name is actually an abbreviation, with each letter corresponding to a specific screening item. Because the questionnaire is very easy to answer—simply check “yes” or “no”—and has a high accuracy rate, doctors often use it to assess risks before surgery or during initial examinations at sleep clinics.

To learn more about the screening scale, see the obstructive sleep apnea screening scale for more screening methods.

When a man snores, a woman should hold his ear.

The questionnaire consists of 8 indicators, divided into two parts: STOP (symptoms) and BANG (signs/demographic characteristics).

Letter Corresponding Indicators
S
Snoring
T
Tired
O

P
Pressure
B
BMI
A
Age
N

G

Let’s assess whether you are at risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Please answer the following questions; it will only take you one minute!

Understanding the Risk Assessment Results

Low Risk: 0-2 questions answered “yes”.

Medium Risk: 3-4 questions answered “yes”.

High Risk: 5-8 questions answered “yes”.

Additionally, if you answered “yes” to 2 or more of the 4 questions in the STOP section and meet any of the following criteria, you are also considered high risk:

Male; Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35 kg/m²; Neck circumference over 40 cm (approximately 16 inches).
